The Zeeland West boys in Division 2 and the Allendale boys in Division 3 both are ranked No. 1 in the state in the first MichiganTrackandField.com Prep Ranking poll, the only such poll that covers the entire state.

A panel of prep coaches compiles the rankings, based on meet results and using the criteria of how a team is projected to finish at the Michigan High School Athletic Association state finals on May 30.

In Division 2 boys, the panel projected Zeeland West as No.1. Other area teams in the top 10 include Sparta (third) and Coopersville (tied for seventh).

The Allendale boys are first in Division 3, followed locally by West Catholic at No. 4, Calvin Christian at No. 5 and Hopkins at No. 7. Godwin Heights was given an honorable-mention nod.

Grand Haven is the area’s top team in the girls Division 1 poll, receiving the No. 3 spot, followed by Rockford in seventh.

In the boys Division 1 rankings, East Kentwood — the only area team to earn a mention in the top 10 — is rated third.

In the girls Division 2 poll, Forest Hills Northern is ranked second, while Holland Christian is tied for sixth with Ypsilanti.

The West Catholic girls are No. 6 in the Division 3 poll, and in Division 4, the Hesperia boys are ranked No. 9.

Updated rankings are available each Tuesday.

The statewide panel involved in these rankings also includes some local coaches. They are John Carlson of Belding, Dave Emeott of East Kentwood, Grant Lofdahl of Allendale and Don Passenger of West Catholic.
