Wurster, Barkley lead way for girls in track and field

Homer High's Nicki Wurster and Olivet's Katy Barkley delivered the best finishes by local female athletes at Saturday's state track finals, as both came through with second-place efforts.

Wurster was second in the 1,600-meter run at the MHSAA Division 4 championships at Jenison High, clocking a 5:07.89; and Barkley was second in the 800-meter run in the D-3 finals at Comstock Park High in a time of 2:18.22.

Following are more local results from Saturday's championships:

D-4 AT JENISON HIGH

Aside from her second-place finish in the 1,600, Homer's Wurster was also fifth in the 3,200-meter run (11:45.79).

Homer had 12 points at the meet, St. Philip had six, Colon five, Athens four and Bellevue one.
