Track meet at EMU

YPSILANTI — Some of the best high school track and field athletes in the United States will converge on Eastern Michigan University June 30-July 1 for the World Youth Track and Field Trials at Rynearson Stadium. The meet is for qualifying 16- and 17-year olds from all over the country trying to make the United State team for the World Youth Championships taking place July 8-12 in Bressanone, Italy.

Outstanding athletes who will likely be Olympians some day will be competing in the meet. Boys entries include Texas sprinter Prezel Hardy (10.08), Ohio distance runner Zach Wills (8:20.17 3000m), Georgia high jumper David Smith (7-2), Pennsylvania long jumper Carlton Lavong (24-6), and Oregon thrower Ryan Crouser (67-7, 198-10).

Expected in the girls events are California thrower Alex Collatz (177-0), Indiana vaulter Ellie McCardwell (13-6), California hurdler Kori Carter (13.59), New York half-miler Phyllis Francis (2:04.83) and California sprinter Ashton Purvis (11.48, 23.46), among many, many other participants.

Among those competing will be Whitmore Lake’s Steven Machin in both the high hurdles and 400 meter hurdles.

There will be preliminaries and some finals on Tuesday beginning at 8 a.m. while Wednesday’s events are all finals. The final event each day is scheduled for 3:30 p.m.
