Nick Perry saved his best for his final career race.

The Woodhaven senior was seventh at Saturday’s Division 1 cross country championship to secure a spot on the all-state team.

His 16-minute, 2.7-second run at Michigan International Speedway was slightly slower than his second-place run at a regional a week earlier, but Coach Mike Dennisuk said Perry was at his best when it came to strategy.

“The kids that ran well on Saturday were really tough and smart and he ran a really good race,” Dennisuk said.

“The pace went out really quick and he caught himself and realized there’s a long way to go.”

The run landed him on the Division 1 dream team.

Teammate Grant Truskowski, the only other Downriver runner at the finals, came home 171st.
