WILDCAT GIRLS WIN WEST OTTAWA INVITE: The Jenison girls cross country team won the Bredeweg Invitational at West Ottawa for the second consecutive season on Saturday. Jenison placed four runners in the top-15 to total 64 points, seven better than runner-up Byron Center.

Ariel Dempsey led the way for the ‘Cats in seventh place, while Rachelle Blanchard was 10th, Katie Gabier 14th and Kelsee VanderBaan 15th. Chandra Swiech just missed out on a medal in 18th place, but secured the win for Jenison as the all-important fifth runner.

“We are stressing consistent effort every day and I have been pleased over the past two races,” said coach Jason Schalk, whose team won the same meet on a sixth-runner tiebreaker in 2008. “We are also focusing on tightening our pack and have made big strides in the past week, not only in races but practice as well. It’s necessary because we don’t have that frontrunner or two to rely on.
