Who knew cross country shorts would grab so much attention?

The post I recently, uh, well, posted about the Maryland cross country team that was disqualified because one runner had improper stitching on compression shorts generated a surprising amount of feedback.

Who knew cross country peeps had groupies?

Several of the e-mails took me to task for not pointing out that a rule is a rule is a rule, and if you break said rule then action is warranted. And they have a point.

Here’s one e-mail that articulated the point well:

“Yes, the rule is ridiculous, but as an official, I would have no choice in enforcing the rule — if noticed, it must be enforced. The National Federation, the governing body of (high school) rules, makes some ridiculous rules for (cross country) and track and field. I have no idea how, or why, these rules are introduced and passed. I would suspect that if the officials did not notice the shorts before the race was started, an opposing coach pointed it out after the finish. Some of them actually read the rule book.
