COMSTOCK PARK — Whitmore Lake High School's Steven Machin was given an unexpected pep talk before the 110 meter hurdles race of Saturday's Division 3 MHSAA state boys track finals at Comstock Park High School.

“A bunch of guys (fellow runners) came up to me …” said Machin, who was striving to knock off the reigning state champion, Michael Parker of Michigan Center. “They said, ‘If anybody can get (Parker), it's you. We need you to get him'.”

“It felt like everybody wanted me to win.”

Machin didn't disappoint. The senior sped to a career-best and school record 14.31 seconds, edging out Parker by five-tenths of a second (14.36). The finish was so close that Machin wasn't sure he was the new state champ.

“I was just waiting for the results. Everyone just said, 'Oh yeah, you got it',” said Machin, who was competing in his third straight state finals.
