Cross country squads heading to regional meet
• High School Cross Country •

All three area cross country teams were scheduled to embark on the post season tournament this Saturday, Oct. 31.

The Whitehall Vikings, whose girls team won its 13th-straight West Michigan Conference title this season, was set to travel to Benzonia-Benzie Central to participate in both the Region 10-2 boys and girlsraces. The Viking girls are to face off with powerful Fremont, the team which finished ninth at last year’s Division 2 finals. The Whitehall boys are set to face off against three powerhouses, including Fremont, which was seventh in the state in 2008, as well as Sparta and Cadillac, which finished twentieth and twenty-first, respectively, at the state last year’s state race. The region also includes Fruitport and Ludington.

For Division 1 Reeths-Puffer, the Rocket girls team, which finished second overall in the O-K Black conference, will both only face conference rival Mona Shores, and area rival Muskegon, but also Rockford, which was fourth in the state last year, as well as defending Division 1 title holder Traverse City Central. On the boys side, Rockford should be strong again after last season’s seventh-place finish at the state meet.

Finally, Montague is scheduled to head east to Grand Rapids Christian, where the girls team will face the likes of Allendale, who finished third at last year’s state meet, and Kent City, which finished sixth overall.

The Kent City boys were 18th in the state in 2008.
