WEST CATHOLIC WINS AT FRUITPORT: The West Catholic girls cross country team headed west to the Fruitport Invitational on Saturday and came away with the first-place trophy.
The Falcons placed six runners in the top-15 and had a span of just 62 seconds elapse between their first and sixth runners crossing the finish line. Kelsey Carpenter led the charge by placing third in 20:44. Teammate Olivia Quam (20:55) finished fourth, just ahead of Megan Debri (20:56) in fifth.
Jill Pindar placed 10th for West, followed closely by Sara Thimmesch and Anna Leikert in 14th and 15th, respectively.
“We had a good, solid run by the pack, which is where we’re at right now,” said West Catholic coach Don Passenger. “I was real surprised they came through that well and were all in the medals. Kelsey Carpenter, our first girl today, has really been stepping up the past few races.
“This is our fourth year (running at Fruitport), and we’ve won it three out of the four years. They love it, and we try to balance between the really competitive meets and smaller meets like this where the girls can really just work on their times.”
This week is a big one for the Falcons. On Wednesday they travel to Riverside Park for an O-K Blue showdown with Cedar Springs in a meet that will go a long way toward deciding the conference championship. On Saturday, they will take part in Michigan’s largest cross country meet, the Portage Invitational.
