Walker second in 1,600; Maxwell second in high jump

EAST KENTWOOD — Dow High’s Stephen Walker and Midland High’s Andrew Maxwell finished their high school athletic careers with a flourish on Saturday at the Division 1 state track and field finals at East Kentwood High School.
Walker — who already won the Division 1 cross country state championship last fall — took second in the 1600-meter run for the second straight year.
Meanwhile, Maxwell — the quarterback on the Chemics’ 2007 Division 2 runner-up football team — broke his previous personal high jump record by 3 inches to finish second in the state at 6 feet, 7 inches.
Both Maxwell and Walker have earned athletic scholarships at Michigan State University — Maxwell in football and Walker in cross country and track.
The only thing that kept Walker from winning the 1600 was a state-record performance by his rival.
