Viking, Reeths-Puffer girls finish 1st and 2nd at GMAA meet

MUSKEGON — The Whitehall Viking girls cross country team won its third-straight Greater Muskegon Athletic Association title Saturday, placing first among the nine-team field with 64 points. Area rival Reeths-Puffer finished second with 76 points, while Montague’s girls team did not field a full lineup.

On the boys side, North Muskegon shocked the field by taking the championship with just 38 points, while powerful Mona Shores finished as runner-up with 69 points.

The Viking girls got key finishes from Susie Klimowicz, who finished third with a time of 20:29, and Onica Endres, who was fourth with a time of 20:40. Reeths-Puffer was led by a ninth-place finish from Olivia Howard, who finished the 5k course at Orchard View High School in 21:03. Teammate Wendy Honick (21:17) was 13th and Allix Miller (21:20) finished 14th overall.

The Montague girls team, which was unable to field a full squad because of injuries and prior commitments, said Head Coach Terry Fick, was led by Makenzie Bortell (21:52), who was 26th overall, and Morgan Cullen (21:55) who was 27th.

On the boys side, Whitehall was the White Lake area’s top team, finishing fourth with 114 points. The Vikings’ efforts were led by a second-place finish by Greg Madendorp, who traversed the 3.1-mile course in 16:49. Teammate Blake Whittington (18:07) was 24th overall, and Chris Tindall (18:28) was 28th.
