STURGIS — The United States Postal Service would be proud.

Whipped by wind that could blow the hair off a dog, pelted by a nearly ceaseless downpour and forced to fight jitters for another restless night, the Vicksburg boys and Sturgis girls track and field teams eventually earned Division 2 regional championships Saturday.

The top two in each event, plus those who hit qualifying standards, advanced to the Division 2 state finals March 30 in Zeeland.

Lightning Friday evening stretched the meet into Saturday afternoon and the Bulldogs, led by senior Thomas Teadt, returned fresh and amassed 120.50 points to hold off St. Joseph (81) and Benton Harbor (68).

Sturgis pushed nine girls through to the state finals and piled up 120 points to take the team crown over Otsego (68) and Vicksburg (62).
