COMSTOCK PARK — It only took a few minutes for the Vassar boys track and field team to come up with a slogan for their new team state title.

“It only takes five.”

That was the buzz phrase around the podium, as the five Vassar athletes accepted team trophy at the MHSAA Division 3 state finals here at Comstock Park Saturday.

The team of Keif Vickers, Troy Hecht, Madison Harper, Justin Locklear and Jason Locklear used depth and strong relay performances to capture Vassar's first boys track team title by beating Frankenmuth, 40-33.

“We have five very good athletes that came out and did exactly what they needed to do,” Vassar coach Jason Kiss said. “They ran their races. We didn't ask them to go above and beyond, we said to do what you're supposed to do and we'll be all right, and that's what happened.”

The Vulcans jumped out to an early lead, when Vickers took home the long jump state title and 10 points for his team in the meet's second event.
