Albion High School narrowly defeated Hillsdale 38-40 to win the second Southern Michigan Activities Association jamboree on Wednesday at Columbia Central.

Hillsdale is ranked third in this week’s Division 3 coaches’ poll — and was previously No. 1 — while Albion is unranked. Stockbridge, which finished third Wednesday, is honorable mention in the state poll.

In the girls race, fourth-ranked Leslie continued its dominance in the league with a convincing win.

For the first time this season, the Albion and Hillsdale boys fielded all of their top five runners in the same race. Albion’s Paul Lewis won, followed by teammate Kenny Harris and Hillsdale’s Sebastian Reisch and Lyle Kafer.

The difference in the race was the re-emergence of Albion’s Jalen Weaver and Abdul Al-Saddi, who had been ill or nursing injuries.
