UNITY GIRLS FINISH SECOND IN O-K GREEN TRACK: The Crusaders fell short of first place but not below expectations in Friday’s conference track and field meet at Hamilton.

Unity had field event strength and claimed five first places as it totaled 95 points in finishing behind only Hamilton.

“Hamilton head great relays. They’re just deep,” said Unity Christian coach Rob Bosma. “They didn’t win a single event but have fantastic distance runners. I’m incredibly proud. Every girl earned their points and more. I thought we’d come out in the mid-eighties. We performed better than we were seeded.”

Winners for Unity included Rachel Smith in the shot put, Becca Schnyders in the pole vault for the second straight year and Kristen Bosch in the long jump. Junior Julie Busscher was a double winner for the Crusaders in the 400 and 200 races while senior Merissa Harkema came in third in the 800 and fourth in the mile in a school-record time of 5:17.
