HUDSONVILLE — Alex Berends claims there wasn’t much of a sibling rivalry when she ran with sisters Janey and Abby during elementary school.

But that was before the triplets, now Hudsonville freshmen, tried out for the Eagles cross country team, drove for personal best times, earned medals and, after last weekend’s dramatic regional in Portage, qualified for the Division 1 state meet Saturday at Michigan International Speedway in Brooklyn.

Now, says Alex, it’s not the worst thing in the world if an an opponent beats you, but you better make sure your sister doesn’t pass you on the course.

“It’s a lot more competitive,” said Alex, one of the three sisters born just minutes apart 14 years ago. “I don’t care if anyone else beats me, but I’m madder if my sister beats me.”
