For Dan Shafer, the “best event” of the 22nd annual Muskrat Classic doesn’t have anything to do with varsity athletes or the point standings.

Instead, the Algonac girls track coach seems most excited about the mascot dash.

Last year, he said the Farmington Hills Harrison Hawk won the event, adding the Lion false-started and the Muskrat couldn’t see.

“It’s just a hilarious thing to watch,” Shafer said.

This is the third year of the mascot dash, in which a junior varsity runner generally runs.

The varsity boys and girls athletes compete in the rest of the event, which consists of relays. The field events get under way at 9:15 a.m. at Algonac High School, with the afternoon session, which begins with the mascot dash, beginning at 1:10 p.m.
