MILAN — Jordan Tomecek, a state champion in two sports who set the record for the fastest girls cross country time in Monroe County Region history, will take her running talents to a Division I school.
The Milan senior signed with Indiana-Purdue (Fort Wayne) for track and field and cross country Monday.
Tomecek is a two-time Region Cross Country Runner of the Year who also won the honor in track last year after taking a state title in the 3,200-meter run. She went undefeated in cross country as a junior, winning the Division 2 state championship in a Region-record 17:40.
She had narrowed her choices down to IPFW and Wisconsin and also visited and seriously considered Michigan State and Spring Arbor.
“I made my decision a week ago Saturday,” Tomecek said. “IPFW has music therapy (major), which is what I’m looking to study. It’s not too far away from home. They will pay for housing and tuition. I only have to worry about feeding myself and getting books.”
The daughter of Brad and Pam Tomecek of Milan also received the Chancellor’s Merit Award which further brought her costs down.
