Fifty years ago this fall, a group of Howell runners and their first-year coach pulled off the improbable, winning the first of two Class B state championships.

It was a group that had only a pair of runners from the previous year’s team which finished sixth in the state.

But their accomplishments have stayed with this group of 16 men, now in their late 60s, as have the camaraderie and kinship a team fosters.

When the teams had a reunion last month, it was like old times.

“We picked up where we let off,” said Al Buckner, who recently moved from California to Bear Lake. “It’s like riding a bicycle. The relationships are still there. Everyone’s gone to their own careers, but when you come here, The stories come back.”
