Taylor Smith-led Otsego girls capture Wolverine Conference cross country crown

THREE RIVERS — Schuyler Mattern is a senior on a very young Otsego girls cross country team, and she expects big things in the future for her less experienced teammates.

The Bulldogs’ present isn’t too bad, either.

“We work hard, plain and simple,” Mattern said. “Practices are always 100 percent. We never slack, never cut miles or anything.”

That hard work paid off Tuesday, when Otsego rolled to the Wolverine Conference championship.

Gull Lake came into the day in first place in the conference, but finished third in the race (with 76 points) behind Otsego (48) and Allegan (69), giving Otsego the overall conference title.

The Bulldogs were led by junior Taylor Smith, who finished first in 18:58. Three Rivers’ Morgan Stuut was second in 19:38.

Otsego’s only loss in dual meets this season came to Gull Lake, so the Bulldogs had some extra motivation.

“It feels really, really good actually,” Smith said. “Even though (Gull Lake) got us in the dual meet, we wanted to get them at conference and we got it. Once we found out we got them, it was so exciting, because they are our main competition.”

Kayla David (20:24) and Mattern (20:34) also broke the top 10, finishing fifth and seventh, respectively.

David, a freshman, was excited about her finish.

“I’m really happy. I wanted to be top five in the conference,” she said. “The course was tough, especially for a conference course. Coach really pushed the hills. You have to work up the hills and then use the downhill to catch people.”

Jessica Shaw (19:43) and Aziza Ahmadi (20:19) finished third and fourth, respectively, to lead Allegan to the second-place finish.
