Saline wins Division 1 race at Jackson Invitational; Ann Arbor Pioneer third, Huron ninth, Dexter 12th

JACKSON — Senior Alex Leptich became only the second runner in Saline High School history to break the 18-minute mark while finishing second at Saturday’s Jackson Invitational.

Leptich’s time of 17:54 led three Hornet runners among the top 10 at the 20-team Division 1 portion of the event, giving them a first-place team total of 89 points.

It’s the third straight year Saline has won the invitational, run at Ella Sharp Park in Jackson.

Pioneer finished third with 128 points, behind second-place Troy (104). Huron (235) was ninth and Dexter (276) 12th.

Kate Carter (4th, 18:17) and freshman Alyssa Cummings (10th, 19:06) were the Hornets’ other top finishers.

Pioneer was led by Elizaveta Boudreau’s sixth-place finish in 18:40, Huron was led by Annie-Norah Beveridge’s ninth-place finish in 19:03, and Dexter’s Kristen Yarows was 12th in 19:07.5.

The only other Hornet runner to run a sub-18:00 time was Eileen Creutz, a state champion in 2004 and 2005.
