Saline High School dominated the 14-team girls cross country field at the 22nd annual Ypsilanti Early Bird Invitational Thursday. The Hornets placed seven runners in the top 25.

Just imagine if they’d brought their A team.

“This gives some of our JV people the chance to compete at a varsity level,” said Saline coach Michael Smith, who rested his varsity runners in preparation for an invitational in Bath on Saturday. Team scores weren’t kept at the Early Bird, but Saline was clearly the class of the competition.

“They did great, if there had been a score I think they would have been first or second.”

Grand Blanc’s Gabi Anzalone, who was fifth place as a sophomore in last year’s Division 1 state championships, won the girls race in a time of 19 minutes, 18 seconds, the second-fastest time ever on Ypsilanti High School’s Simpson Trail
