Saline High School’s girls cross country team ran what coach Michael Smith called its best race of the season. It still it wasn’t enough to topple a tough Rockford squad at the Bath Invitational Saturday.

The two teams had 13 of the top 20 runners between them in the Division 1 race. Rockford held a slight edge, scoring 37 points to Saline’s 44.

“Rockford’s overall balance offset our strength up front,” said Smith.

Alex Leptich came in first with a personal best time of 18 minutes 18 seconds. Teammate Kate Carter was second at 18:21.

Chelsea competed against some of the state’s stiffest competition in the Division 2 portion of the invite. The Bulldogs finished seventh in the 17 team field, which included five teams that qualified for last year’s state championships.

“We ran as a team and improved our times by an average of 43 seconds per girl,” said Chelsea coach Pat Clarke. Sophomore Jessi Battaglia (21:13) was Chelsea’s lone medalist, finishing 26th.

Williamston won the Division 2 portion of the Invitational with 36 points. Dewitt was second with 65.
