Salem girls 2nd at Wayne County Cross Country meet

Strong individual performances Saturday didn’t quite garner the Wayne County Cross Country meet championship for host Salem’s varsity girls team.

But how does finishing second out of 33 teams sound, not to mention all seven Salem girls winning individual medals?

Following the awards ceremony at New Boston’s Willow Metropark, Rocks’ head coach Dave Gerlach was elated with how his squad performed. Salem finished with 74 points — trailing first-place Grosse Pointe South (43) and nipping Sara Kroll-led Livonia Churchill (76).

“All year we’ve been working on our packing and our pacing and today we came in second place due to the fact we really packed them in,” Gerlach said. “To be able to come in second in a meet with 33 teams is a tremendous feat.”

Other Observerland schools were bunched together in the top-10 team standings: Livonia Franklin, fifth, 157; Canton, sixth, 172; Plymouth, seventh, 201; Livonia Stevenson, eighth, 204; Livonia Ladywood, 10th, 388.
