Romeo sophomore Shelby Jackson’s late-race surge propelled her to a first-place overall finish in the girls meet at the Oct. 17 Macomb County Cross Country Championships, leading the Bulldogs to a thrilling victory over perennial power Stevenson.

The Bulldogs had a team score of 70 points in winning the meet, which took place at Stony Creek Metropark’s Eastwood Beach. Stevenson, which had won two straight county titles, 15 of the past 16 and 22 of 27 heading into the meet, was runner-up with 72 points. The Titans have either won or finished as runners-up each season in the 28-year history of the county meet under coach Kevin Hanson, who’s been at the helm since 1982.

Running at the front of the field along with Stevenson senior/fourth-year team member Melanie Brender and Warren Woods-Tower’s Louisa Coppola, Jackson pulled away as the trio approached the finish line, winning in 19 minutes, 27 seconds. Coppola (19:29) and Brender (19:33) were second and third.
