Rockford girls take third at state

ADVANCE NEWSPAPERS, November 07, 2010 2:26 p.m.

The topsy-turvy season for the Rockford girls cross country team continued and ended at Saturday’s Division 1 state meet at Michigan International Speedway.

Rockford finished third after flip-flopping finishes with Grand Haven at the regional meet at Allendale High School one week earlier.

Grand Haven, which finished third at the regional, emerged with the state championship with a total of 135 points. Traverse City Central, which was second at the Allendale regional, finished second in the state with a total of 154 points. Rockford, which won the regional, placed third at Saturday’s state finals with 167 points, two points ahead of Northville and seven in front of Pinckney.

“This is the one you want to win,” Rockford coach Ben Watson said. “This is the one you remember. Unfortunately, our girls did have a great day and Grand Haven and Traverse City ran great. Hopefully, we’ll be in the hunt again.”

All seven Rockford runners finished the race in less than 20 minutes.
