Rockford girls finish runner-up at cross country state finals

BROOKLYN — The Rockford girls cross country team had the best finish among local Division 1 teams Saturday at the state championships, finishing second with 192 points, 51 points behind champion Saline.

The Rams were led by sophomore Jane Hawks, who was 16th with a time of 18:58.8.

“It’s the best finish for any girl on this team,” Rockford coach Ben Watson said. “We set our sights very high, and to be No. 2 is pretty awesome.”

Rochester’s Megan Goethals won the race with a record-setting time of 16:54.8.

East Kentwood’s Alissa Williams was the area’s top finisher among girls (ninth, 18:39.9).

In the boys race, Troy’s Mike Atchoo won with a time of 15:28.5.

Kenowa Hills senior Reed Kamyszek was the top local finisher (eighth, 16:02.9).
