Track, softball, soccer and tennis ranked third-sixth in statewide participation among girls sports last school year. All are played in the spring.

Plus, girls lacrosse participation has risen every season since becoming an MHSAA sport in 2005.

Meanwhile, both girls track and softball have seen declines the past four years, and soccer in each of the last three. Softball participation has fallen by 13 percent, double that of track, over the same period.

Some of the shift may be attributed to the shift of girls tennis to the spring and golf to fall beginning in 2007-08, as tennis generally draws nearly three times the athletes as girls golf.
