Powers Catholic’s McKenzie Mora runs best race of season to win Big Nine cross country title

FLUSHING TOWNSHIP, Michigan – It was meant as a compliment, but Glenn Cosey wasn’t quite sure.

So, after running the Big Nine Conference cross country meet Wednesday, Cosey hugged Carman-Ainsworth coach Kenn Domerese and needed something explained.

Cosey, according to Domerese, said: “‘Hey, this Powers kid said I have a helluva kick. What is he talking about?’ He had no clue what it meant.”

Cosey may still be learning the jargon of cross country, but he has the essentials down-pat.

Cosey’s kick – his ability to sprint in the late stages of the race – made him the most improbable champion in the 50-year history of the Big Nine. He pulled away from a pack of four Powers Catholic runners to win with a time of 16:18.0 at Flushing Township Nature Park.
