PIONEERS SECOND AT MICHIGAN STATE INVITE: The East Grand Rapids girls cross country team is the defending Division 2 state champion and is ranked No. 1 in the state. Where does such a team go to find competition? The Pioneers went to East Lansing on Friday afternoon, where they took on 10 of the top-11 ranked teams in Division 1.

The results were spectacular, as East Grand Rapids finished second in the 24-team field. Saline, ranked second in Division 1, scored 160 points to the Pioneers’ 175. Grosse Pointe South placed third with 180 points.

Senior Lauren Grunewald led the Pioneers, as she has all season. Despite the 80-degree heat, Grunewald ran up front with the leaders for most of the race, eventually finishing in 13th place. Fellow senior Katie Samuelson ran a lifetime best of 19:17 for 21st, while Jessie Baloga, Kathleen Stubbs and Brianna Clifford placed 25th, 49th and 77th to finish the scoring.
