School turns purple to support coach

By Nicole Hornbaker Hamner

LEROY – It’s Homecoming week at Pine River Schools, and it is a spirit-building, celebratory time. But the students and staff have something else on their minds besides the usual dance, spirit week and football game.

The school has come together to unite behind 36-year veteran coach and teacher, Cecil R. Burch, who is battling pancreatic cancer.

In addition to a fundraiser and ceremony in his honor scheduled for Saturday during the Pine River Invitational, the high school made Thursday’s spirit theme “Cecil R. Burch” day.

Typically during Homecoming, students have dress-up themes to get them in the school spirit, from wacky dress day to pajama day.

What was supposed to be another typical theme day became a chance to honor the beloved Burch.
