BENZONIA – The goal is the same for the Petoskey High School cross country teams: A berth in the Division II state finals.

First-year coach Keith Henning knows that goal will be difficult to reach, and not just because of the competition.

“The ultimate goal is to get both teams in (the finals),” Henning said. “That much is no different this year than any other year, but for us now you have to look at this flu thing and the injuries we’ve had.

“We’re still trying to determine who’ll be able to run.”

No matter who will run for the Northmen Saturday, they’ll be doing it against Division II powers such as Sparta, Fremont and Gaylord at Benzie Central High School.

The Fremont boys are ranked 10th in the state coaches poll, while Gaylord, which is fresh off its first Big North Conference championship, is an honorable mention.

“The Gaylord girls are an awesome team too,” Henning said. “We’ll do the best we can do with what we’ll have and hopefully it will play out in the end on both sides.”
