ZEELAND — When preparing for Saturday’s Division 2 track and field state meet, Croswell-Lexington junior Leah O’Connor couldn’t help but think back to this past season’s cross country state meet.

O’Connor was heading down the stretch in one of the top positions before collapsing because of dehydration.

O’Connor kept that in mind as Saturday drew closer and took the necessary precautions to make sure nothing would affect her performance.

She then went out and had a career day at Zeeland Community Schools, winning state crowns in both the 800 (2:15.41) and 1,600 (5:03.38) runs.

“I learned from the cross country (state) meet not to take any chances,” O’Connor said. “Everything counts. I did my best to do everything necessary — hydrating and getting all of the rest I needed.
