Oakridge cross country runner Samantha Zimmer looks to finish strong

The finish line was in sight.

A possible all-state finish was in her grasp.

In 18th-place performance and closing quickly, Oakridge’s Samantha Zimmer fell to the track and passed out for a brief moment – not completing the race.

That is the last thing Zimmer remembers about last year’s MHSAA Division 3 state finals.

“I remember passing the three-mile sign and seeing the finish line,” said Zimmer. “Then I just started slowing down and I passed out.”

The junior runner had pushed her body to the extreme and low blood sugar and lactic acid levels proved to be the cause of Zimmer collapsing within 150 yards of the finish line at Michigan International Speedway.

“It was disappointing being so close to finishing and maybe getting an all-state finish,” said Zimmer. “Being my first year running cross country, being a little inexperienced and not having the right diet is what me and my coach think was the problem.”

That disappointing finish has Zimmer refocused and determined to get back to the state finals meet this season.
