from staff reports

CARSON CITY — Benzie Central “squeaked” it out Saturday.

The Huskies, ranked No. 1 in Division 3 in girls and boys cross country, swept the Green Division at the Carson City Invitational — barely.

Benzie edged Williamston 53-54 to win the girls race. The Huskies beat Grand Rapids West Catholic 104-106 to take the boys race.

“The kids ran well, but by no means was it their best,” Benzie coach Asa Kelly said. “We still have a lot of work to do.”

Michaela Carnegie led the girls, finishing fourth (19:26). Taylor Nye was sixth (19:46), Theresa Warsecke 12th (20:06), Marika Grabowski 13th (20:10) and Amber Peabody 18th (20:17).

The boys were led by Tom Smeltzer, who placed 14th (16:58). Rick Jones came in 17th (17:03), Travis Clous 18th (17:03), Robert Kirby 22nd (17:07) and Talon Morris 33rd (17:18).

In the large school White Division, Traverse City West finished seventh with 234 points. Ionia took first with 60.

“We’re starting to come along,” West coach Dan Zemper said. “We’re getting more consistent meet to meet.”
