ERIE – It was the final Mason Invitational for St. Mary Catholic Central running star Meg Bellino Saturday, and she wanted to go out with a sparkling performance.
She limped out instead.
The Region’s premier girls sprinter and middle distance runner announced Saturday that she will be joining the University of Michigan track program as a preferred walk-on.
She was the girls Most Valuable Athlete at Mason last year and might have been again if she hadn’t injured her right hamstring while running in the 200-meter semifinals.
“I heard something pop,” said Bellino, who pulled up lame coming around the curve and hobbled to the finish line.
She was done for the day, barely able to walk off the track to the SMCC tent with the help of her family. She had a bag of ice tapped to her hamstring.
