A recent post in the mlive track forum suggested that the MHSAA is seven million dollars in debt because it was wrong in the gender equity lawsuit. They did of course lose, but that does not mean they were wrong. So this week's question is:

Should the MHSAA have been able to continue with the prior sports seasons?

Who was wrong:

the MHSAA - they should have changed on request

or

the court - they have no business telling a private organization such as the MHSAA how to run their business

You may believe that the MHSAA had the right to set it's own seasons, but was wrong in fighting on through multiple courts and thus achieved a great bill -- you would still vote yes in that case.

Diabetes: Controlling Blood Sugar

While we are talking about health, this is one worth mentioning. I have had a diabetic athlete on my team several different years, in my case hypoglycemia or low blood sugar. The athlete must be acutely aware of their situation and attempt to take steps to alleviate a condition of low blood sugar before the onset of symptoms.

We were advised to watch for four primary conditions:

noticable difficulty with concentration or clear thought
grouchy or irritable behavior
shaky, nervous or sweaty
weak, dizzy, sleepy or poor coordination

We were asked to follow a 15/15 fix which involved 15 grams of carbo's and wait 15 minutes. Occasionally we had to delay a segment of our workout, but as time went on it occurred less and less frequently as the athlete became better able to project what was going to happen next.

Fifteen grams of carbos included:

3-4 glucose tablets
4 oz's fruit juice
4 starbursts -- our most frequent solution as the athlete could easily pack some of them
5 mentos
candies or fruit snacks - check the nutritiion label
1 cup gatorade

We had a glucagon kit, but never had to use it. It was to be used if the athlete became drowsy or had difficulty swallowing as nothing would be given by mouth in that case due to choking hazard.

The athlete needed one fifteen carb serving per 30 minutes of exercise, so planning ahead and knowing the duration of practices was helpful to the athlete.

What to avoid:

chocolate
high fat foods -- prevents absorbtion of the sugars
milk (low fat is possible if you are ahead of the game)

As with all special medical needs athletes we ask the parent to provide us with the following:

Written Info on the Topic
Parents contact info: work, home, cell
secondary contact info if parent unavailable
Dr. contact info including their emergency paging service

This information was carried in our medical kit that is present at all practices and at all meets.

Thanks for handling Runner-X for as long as you did.

I officially shut it down and I hope that you don't have to deal with all the spam things again.

I have forwarded Runner-x.com to this website. I am going to let it run out on the subscription. Let me know if you are interested, so that you can buy it right when it runs up. I think it's like $10 a year. Otherwise, it's no big deal.

Best of luck to you. I run about once a month, but am active on the swim team at CMU. It was fun to compete again and swim as fast as I did in high school. I am also interested in biking and hope to take that up when it gets warm.

Best of luck to everyone,
