15th Annual Macomb County Prediction Contest
Macomb County Meet Prediction Contest

The time has finally arrived for the 15th Annual Macomb County Prediction Contest! The race takes place on Saturday, October 14th, at the Lake St. Clair Metro Park (Metro Beach).

Due to the rather lackluster response the last couple of years, there will be no prizes offered this year, just the satisfaction of knowing that you are the best Fantasy Cross Country contestant in the area, thus earning the title of Grand Swami.

Rules:

For the Macomb contest, you pick the order of the top 21 runners. Your score is the difference between your pick and the actual place of the runner (in absolute numbers). Lowest cumulative total wins.

The tiebreaker is guessing the team score of the winner.

Note: If a runner you pick doesn't finish, your score for that runner is as follows:

[(last place #) plus (one) minus (your place pick)].

Thus, having a kid not finish really kills your score. Also, if a runner you pick runs in the JV race instead, you take the highest place he would have scored in the varsity race (ties go to the varsity runner).

For example, if you picked

1) Smith
2) Jones
3) Brown
4) Green
5) Whoever

and they finished

1) Whoever
2) Jones
3) Green
4) Smith
5) Brown

Your total score would be (3+0+2+1+4=10 points)

I will submit my picks in a separate post...

Entries must be submitted by Midnight on Friday, October 13th (so I have time to put together my spreadsheet)

NOTE: You can either submit your entry as a reply to this post, or you may send them to me via the "private message" feature of this forum (if you are afraid someone will steal your picks...).

I know some coaches who have played in past years, but stopped for whatever reason. If you want to keep your picks confidential, send them to me via email, as I would like more participants (especially those with knowledge of the sport).

Note: Final Rankings will be posted below for Boys' and Girls', so if you need a guide, that might be a place to start (if you have any trust in me, that is).
Here are expanded Final Rankings. I have attached the Top 35, along with any other runner who has bee a top 35 runner at some point during the season. Format is their current rank, their highest rank for the season, name, school, grade, and their projected time in seconds. This may be a good place to start for those who don't follow the season as closely as I do, lol.

RE: 15th Annual Macomb County Prediction Contest
OFFICIAL RESULTS:

After review, the winner of the 2017 Macomb County Cross Country Prediction Contest is...Nobody! Based on the results I have, nobody was able to beat The Rankings for either of the Boy's or Girl's races. This is a first, as the Rankings have had the best performance in a gender before, but never overall.

Here are the preliminary scores:

Boy's:
1) 37 pts - Rankings
2) 49 pts - Bounce
3) 55 pts - Jnathletic
4) 57 pts - Beaker
5) 64 pts - Ike4Lyfe
6) 72 pts - Runninchip
7) 74 pts - Jack Roberts

Girl's:
1) 96 pts - Rankings
2) 129 pts - Jnathletic
3) 215 pts - Bounce (122 pts on one DNF)
4) 219 pts - Runninchip (124 pts on one DNF)
5) 226 pts - Ike4Lyfe (128 pts on one DNF)
6) 227 pts - Jack Roberts (127 pts on one DNF)
7) 227 pts - Beaker (126 pts on one DNF)

Over-All (Grand Swami)
1) 133 pts - Rankings
2) 184 pts - Jnathletic
3) 264 pts - Bounce (122 pts on one DNF)
4) 284 pts - Beaker (126 pts on one DNF)
5) 290 pts - Ike4Lyfe (128 pts on one DNF)
6) 291 pts - runninchip (124 pts on one DNF)
7) 301 pts - Jack Roberts (127 pts on one DNF)

Jnathletic was the only one who had a shot at beating the rankings, as he was the only one of the pickers to have all of his runners finish. So I guess he was the best "Predictor", but could not outperform the Rankings.

Try not! Do, or do not. There is no try!

RE: 15th Annual Macomb County Prediction Contest
Thanks to those who played. I have had fun with it, even if nobody else seems to care much! Better than playing Fantasy Football, IMHO.

--------------------------------------------------------------------------------

Race Note: if you did not break 17 minutes yesterday, you were not All-County on the boy's side. Third time this has happened since I started watching in 2000. Very quick race! This year had the fastest 21st place in the last 18 years (2000-2017), though in 2014 and 2016 the top 21 were also under 17 minutes. Of course, most people would agree that the course at Metro Beach is a little quicker than any course out at Stony Creek, so there is that caveat. Also, the top 22 in the Girl’s race broke 21 minutes, another good sign.

Rankings had an exceptional year, picking 17 of 21 on the girl's side (the four unranked had been in the top 28 at some point this year), and 19 of 21 on the boy's side (the two who missed finished 22nd and 23rd). So no real surprises there.

Girls - Unranked Making All-County (and other noteworthy All-County efforts)

rnk - plc - var
39 -- 18 -- 21 – Alexandra Pannemann -- CV *** -- High Rank = 28 - wrong runner - s/b Elise
57 -- 18 -- 39 – Elise Pannemann -- CV *** -- High Rank = 53
32 -- 12 -- 20 -- Morgan Franks -- Ike *** -- High Rank = 24
30 -- 21 -- 09 – Natalie Molotky -- Rom *** -- High Rank = 27
22 -- 19 – 03 – Annalee Misch -- Ike -- High Rank = 22
17 -- 11 -- 06 – Chloe Jablonski -- WWT -- High Rank = 17
08 -- 04 – 04 – Andrea Barretto -- Ike -- High Rank = 05

Boys - Unranked Making All-County (and other noteworthy All-County efforts)

rnk - plc - var
23 -- 16 -- 7 – Tyler Carlson – Memp -- High Rank = 20
26 -- 20 -- 6 – Cedric Grant – CV -- High Rank = 23

*** reasons to not trust the rankings…

Congratulations to all of the Freshmen to make All-County this year. The boy’s race had two frosh battling right to the line, with Tyler Carlson from Memphis edging Carson Nicoletti from Utica, with both timed in 16:46 for 16th and 17th place, respectively. Madison Kovacic from HFII was the top female frosh finishing 16th in 20:37, with Annalee Misch from Ike following closely in 19th with a time of 20:50. Should be some fun racing between these kids over the next 3 years!

Also, I want to give my personal MVP's of the day.

For the boy's, it had to be Jack Wilson from Romeo pulling out the victory. While it was not really a surprise like last year (he was the defending champion, after all), he has been challenged hard by his teammate, senior Brenden Allen, all season, and went into the meet as the slight underdog according to the rankings (albeit by only ½ second). The race was as tight as advertised, as Jack pulled away near the finish for a 1 second victory to retain his County title.

For the girl's I am awarding co-MVP's again this year. Karenna Duffey from L'anse Cruese North pulled off the 4-Peat, not unexpectedly. She has put together an outstanding career for LCN, and it has been a pleasure seeing her run. But I also appreciate those who make it possible for their teams to succeed, and on that note my “Team” MVP had to be Natalie Molotky from Romeo. She ran a PR of 35 seconds to not only make the All-County Team (21st), but to help her Romeo team to a hard-fought 2-point victory over Eisenhower. Had she PR’d by a “mere” 22 seconds (which still would have been an outstanding effort), Eisenhower would have been victorious. Congratulations to both of these fine athletes!

Team-wise, the Romeo Boy’s performed as advertised, placing six runners in the top 13 for a Team score of 29 points. A dual meet between Romeo and the rest of the County would have been very close. The battle on the Girl’s side between Romeo and Eisenhower was epic, again as advertised (maybe even better). Both teams came with their “A” game, and no one was quite sure who won until the official results were posted. Both teams placed their top five on the All-County team, including three who were not ranked in the Final Top 21. A few seconds here and there, and the order could easily have been reversed. Excellent racing!

Congratulations to all the runners who performed admirably yesterday. It was extremely enjoyable seeing the effort and results that came out of this meet, which is my favorite meet of the year. It may not be the most important (see REGIONALS), but it is the showcase event for Macomb County, and it was amazing again yesterday. I look forward, however, to the event going back to one of the Stony Creek courses in the future.

Hope to see you all next Saturday at the MAC Division Championships! Should be another great day of racing at the Beach!

Try not! Do, or do not. There is no try!
