Two local state champions battle to the wire indoors; Cross Country
Advance Newspapers, March 02, 2009 7:41 p.m.

TWO LOCAL STATE CHAMPIONS BATTLE TO THE WIRE INDOORS: West Catholic senior Tony Schafer and Kenowa Hills junior Reed Kamyszek claimed cross country state titles in Division 2 and Division 2 respectively last fall, and now that the two have joined forces even bigger things may be in store.

The two state winners have spent time together training this winter and put on a show at Saturday's MITS indoor track state meet. First, Kamyszek and Schafer teamed with Kent City's Alex Wilson and Calvin Christian's Edwin Wainaina to take second place in the 3200-meter run as the "Cold Machine" club team.

Then the two cross country champions and Wilson moved on to the 3200-meter run. All three stayed in the lead pack for much of the race, and a few laps into the race Kamyszek passed leader Tec Adams (the Division 4 cross country champ last fall) and took the lead. Adams and Kamyszek traded the lead for a few laps before the Kenowa runner surged ahead and made his bid for the win. Adams fell back, but Kamyszek's training partner was closing in. Schafer caught Kamyszek with less than a lap to go and went on to win in a personal best time of 9:22.29 with Kamyszek right behind 9:23.61. Wilson wound up in 11th place in 9:42.72.

"We train together about three times a week," said Schafer. "Greg Meyer (Grand Rapids native and former world-class marathoner) trains us and we work out quite a bit."

Kamyszek said that training on Grand Valley State's new 300-meter indoor track has been good for his workouts, but the adjustment to the smaller 200-meter track at CMU was difficult.

"This was a pretty different track compared to that nice 300-meter track," he noted. "It has tighter corners here. I actually took the twice. I passed Tec after about five laps and then he held on and eventually regained the lead. I took it a second time and eventually ended up breaking him and that was a relief for us."

Schafer said he "should have" started a bit faster and stayed close to Kamyszek during the early stayed of the race, but he had a hard time moving up through the pack.

"I kind of got boxed in for a while," said Schafer. "I finally caught up to Tec Adams and Reed in the last two or three laps. I thought Reed was going to take it because I was tired from catching up. I just caught up and we brought it in together."

Many other local athletes competed at the meet as well. Sparta senior Brandon VanDriel was fourth in the 60-meter dash, West Catholic's Olivia Sydow finished 10th in the 1600 and competed in the distance medley relay on a team that placed fifth, Kenowa Hills' Kari Kenney and West Catholic's Kelly Morrissey tied for 10th in the pole vault and Kent City's Sadie Ringer placed eighth in the 3200.
thanks for posting, good article
Yeah, thanks for posting. I'm too lazy to post my own stories here. Most of the time anyway.

Plus it can be very difficult to find anything from the Advance on Mlive! For example, I just spent 15 minutes trying to find two other articles from the indoor state meet on other Grand Rapids-area winners and found zilch. Behold the wonders of the internet.

Aha, I spoke too soon. I doubt a more convoluted web site exists than Mlive, but if you search around for a while you can find things:

Rockford's Birkmeier wins indoor state; Track
Advance Newspapers, March 02, 2009 6:40 p.m.

ROCKFORD'S BIRKMEIER WINS INDOOR STATE: Indoor track may not be an MHSAA-sponsored sport, but the competition at the Michigan Indoor Track Series state meet last Saturday was fierce nonetheless.

Rockford's Sarah Birkmeier traveled to Mt. Pleasant for the unofficial state meet at Central Michigan University and took home big honors for her pole-vaulting exploits. The Rams junior captured first place with a clearance of 12 feet, 1 inch and gave the crowd a thrill as she attempted a state record 12-7. Birkmeier's 12-1 vault was good enough to pass East Kentwood's Abby Shanahan (12 feet, 3/4-inch) for an MITS state meet record.

Birkmeier also took home a plaque as she was named girls field event performer of the meet. She wasn't the only Rockford athlete to compete at the state meet, as teammate Rachel Herald placed fourth in the high jump, Emma Breen placed fifth in the long jump and sixth in the 200-meter dash, Danielle Putterman was sixth in the 60-meter hurdles, and Becky Caywood placed 11th in the 200.

Allendale's Hill wins indoor state title; Track
Advance Newspapers, March 02, 2009 6:38 p.m.

ALLENDALE'S HILL WINS INDOOR STATE TITLE: Indoor track may not be an MHSAA-sponsored sport, but the competition at the Michigan Indoor Track Series state meet last Saturday was fierce nonetheless.

Allendale senior Zack Hill made his trip to Central Michigan for the unofficial state meet more than worthwhile by winning the shot put and taking a close second in the 25-pound weight throw. The future Michigan State Spartan thrower broke the MITS state meet record in the shot put with a personal best toss of 61 feet, 9 inches, breaking the old meet record by 2.5 inches.

Hill also had a thrilling battle with Saline high School's Quinn Dawson in the weight throw, which was contested for the first time at the state meet. Dawson entered the meet as the state record holder in the relatively new event, but Hill smashed the 61-foot record with a heave 63-9 ½ to take over the lead. Ultimately Dawson got his record back and extended it with a throw of 66-4 ¾ on his final attempt.

Hill was named outstanding field event athlete of the meet for his accomplishments, which came after the senior had been sick for several weeks.

"I felt good, I'm finally healthy after three weeks of being sick," said Hill. "I did way better than I was hoping to. I was just hoping to get over 60 (feet) in shot and I had a big throw, and in (the weight throw) I had no idea. I haven't really been healthy throwing it, so that was more than I wanted."

A number of other local athletes competed in state meet as well. Allendale's Thomas Soisson was the runner-up in the long jump and also teamed with Falcon teammate Chris Teitsma, Grandville's Carlos Clay and Hopkins' Cameron Crowe to place 11th in the 800-meter relay. Clay also placed eighth in the long jump.

Calvin Christian senior Edwin Wainaina finished fourth in the 800-meter run and ran on the second-place 3200-meter relay team as well. Other strong finishes included Hudsonville's Evan McDowell (eighth in the high jump), Allendale's Josh Moskalewski (11th in the 1600), Grandville's Danielle Tepper and Rachael Steil (10th and 11th in the 800) and Hudsonville's Kaleigh Carlson (10th in the 400).

A solid contingent of Zeeland throwers also traveled to the meet including John Kamps, Alex Slagh, Tanner Hardester and Lee VanKampen. Slagh finished ninth in the weight throw while Kamps was fifth and Hardester eighth in the shot put.
