But when Maple Valley senior Jeff Burd finished second by just 7/100ths of a second to defending Division 3 400-meter state champion Tony Rasch of Perry at the Saginaw Valley State University Indoor High School Meet, his season changed.

“That told me I could be a state champion at the end of the season,” Burd said.

Nearly three weeks ago in Comstock Park, Burd claimed the state title – in 49.38 seconds.

“I kind of expected to win, because I went undefeated in the 400 (outdoors),” said Burd, who edged D.J. Kilgo of Wyoming Lee (49.96) and Rasch (50.26).
