Madrigal, Powell win state titles for Durand

COMSTOCK PARK — Durand boasted a pair of state champions here at the MHSAA Lower Peninsula Track and Field Finals.

Durand senior David Madrigal III captured a state title in the boys’ 3,200-meter run while clocking a time of 9 minutes, 25.13 seconds.

“David is really excited. He felt strong going into the two-mile,” said coach Madrigal. “It was sort of a slow tactical race at the start. But with six laps to go, he broke free of everyone and opened up a lead of about 20 yards. He did what he had to do to win the race.”

Madrigal also captured state runner-up honors in the 1,600 run while crossing the line in 4:17.58 — which broke his own school record. Alex Wilson of Kent City nipped Madrigal by under two seconds, running 4:15.77.

“David felt a little tight at the start,” said his coach and father. But on the third lap he started coming on really strong and broke his final school record of his career.”
