LINDEN, Michigan – Many cross country coaches view regionals as a means to an end, a way to get their teams or individuals through to the state meet.

With the top three teams in each regional advancing to Michigan International Speedway, all that matters is landing one of those three spots. First place is as good as third in terms of qualifying.

Linden’s boys, meanwhile, embrace the opportunity to win a third straight regional championship Saturday in the Division 2 meet at Springfield Oaks County Park in Davisburg. While the bottom line is getting to state, Linden coach Clint Lawhorne would consider it a special achievement to win three consecutive regionals.

“Speaking as a coach who has been in track 15 years now and has never won a regional title, that’s a big deal,” Lawhorne said. “As a coach, I feel lucky to be part of this opportunity, to have kids willing to put in the time and effort to work to have that chance. I’m excited for them. If we can pull it off, we’re going to celebrate and enjoy it, because it’s a big deal.”
