Kinney Named GLIAC Female Scholar Athlete of the Year Junior Won Two Individual National Championships During 2010-11 (Mile Run and 5,000 Meter Run)

Bay City, Mich. – After a banner 2010-11 athletic and academic year, Grand Valley State junior Monica Kinney was voted one of two recipients of the GLIAC Scholar Athlete of the Year award, as released by the conference offices on Thursday (July 14). The female winner of the prestigious honor, Kinney captured two Division II individual national championships this year, as well as helping GVSU win team national titles in both indoor and outdoor track and field.

Kinney was chosen along with Wayne State swimmer Matthew Laschuk as the two winners of the GLIAC Scholar Athlete of the Year award, which was voted on by the league’s faculty athletic representatives. “Monica Kinney and Matthew Laschuk serve as an outstanding representation of the caliber of student-athletes we have in the GLIAC,” stated GLIAC Commissioner Dell Robinson. “We are proud of their accomplishments in the classroom and in their respective sports. The award provides a platform for their talents to be showcased.”
