Michigan Center High School junior Michael Parker needed one try to break a school record.

Parker set the school record in the 400-meter run Tuesday in his first time running the race.

The feat came in an 89-47 home victory for the Cardinals over East Jackson.

Parker’s winning time of 50.99 seconds broke the previous record of 51.3, which was set by Mike Willis and had stood since 1970.
