Irish win Class D cross country title

Sacred Heart Academy wanted to win it and so did Bridget Bennett.

In the end both got their wish Saturday as the Irish girls won the Michigan Class D Cross Country Coaches Association state title at Buck’s Run Golf Course, finishing atop the 31-team field with 97 total points.

Bennett also had a day as she won the girls race via her second-fastest time of the season, 18:48. She also won the race last season coming in with a time of 18:40.

“I just wanted to go out and feel that first mile,” said Bennett, who finished nearly 50 seconds ahead of second-place finisher Brianne Feldpausch of Fowler. “I guess I was trying to run a little faster than usual because I didn’t want anyone catching me, that’s not a good feeling when that happens. I feel good about winning it but we wanted to win the team title too.”

And win it they did by having all five of their runners finish in the top 41.

Battle Creek St. Philip finished a close second …
