IONIA – The entire cross country season will come down to the regional meet at Fish Creek Sportsman’s club in Carson City on Saturday.

For the Ionia boys team, the meet is the first obstacle standing between them and their goal of winning the first state championship for Ionia High School in any sport.

This fall, the Bulldogs have spent most of the season ranked No. 1 in Division 2 and had won every meet they had run, including the Greater Lansing Championships, and the Portage Invitational, where they defeated many of the other topped ranked teams in the state. This past weekend, with their No. 1 runner Austin Alcala out due to illness and many other running under the weather, the Bulldogs finished second Chippewa Hills this past weekend to No. 9 Fremont. It was the lowest the team had finished all season.

Although Ionia has not suffered any significant injuries, the flu bug that has been going around has hit six of the seven varsity runners, who have suffered various symptoms of the illness. As a result, runners have struggled over the last week. However, Ionia coach Chris Young said his team is improving and still should be the favorite Saturday.
