BROOKLYN — Freshman Avery Evenson, running hard into a headwind, beat Livonia Churchill’s Sara Kroll in the final 10 yards to finish second overall at the girls Division 1 state cross country meet Saturday at Michigan International Speedway.
The Hartland team, making its first appearance since moving up from Class B/Division 2 more than a quarter-century ago, finished 15th overall.

Pinckney, ranked No. 2 in the state, finished fifth overall with 253 points. Saline won the girls title.

Brighton finished 23rd out of 28 teams.

Evenson, the county’s best female runner this year, ran strong into a 20-mph headwind and caught a flagging Kroll at the wire, finishing in 18 minutes, 10.3
seconds and winning by two-fifths of second.

“Avery always said she didn’t think she had a (finishing) kick,” Hartland coach Mary Rinkus said. “She found one today.”
