ALLENDALE — Grand Valley State junior Monica Kinney and women’s track coach Jerry Baltes are the recipients of a pair of prestigious honors from the U.S. Track & Field and Cross Country Coaches Association.

Kinney, a former West Catholic High School standout, has been named USTFCCCA Midwest women’s track athlete of the year while Balters has been named Midwest women’s coach of the year.

The No. 1-ranked Lakers’ women’s team competes March 11-12 in the NCAA Division II indoor national championships in Albuquerque, N.M. Eighteen student-athletes competing in 19 events will represent the GVSU women’s team in the meet.

Kinney, who helped the Lakers win their 12th consecutive Great Lakes Intercollegiate Athletic Conference indoor title this season,is qualified for three events at the national meet.

She owns the top-time in NCAA Division II in the mile run (4 minutes, 43.64 seconds) and ranks fourth in the 5,000-meter run (16:26.52). She also is part of the distance medley relay that has posted a national qualifying time of 11:41.50.

Earlier, Baltes was named GLIAC indoor coach of the year for the 10th time in his career.
