Great expectations

Every athlete involved in this Saturday's MHSAA Track and Field State Finals is hoping to be at their best.

But the pressure to peak at the right time is certainly greater for those who are expected to be the best.

That will be the case when the Albion boys' track team goes for its third consecutive state championship when it competes at the Division 3 Finals at Comstock Park, as well as for a trio of local athletes carrying top seeds.

“Our expectations are high, we hope we can three-peat, but we have a couple of injuries,” said Albion head coach Mike Jurasek. “The first year, we knew it was a dogfight, and we won by one point… Last year Allendale had some good people, but they had some injuries, including their best sprinter. If you would have asked me in the beginning of this season, if we had everybody healthy, I would have said we would have won in a cakewalk.”

Three of the Wildcats' top sprinters, Todd Atchison, Dion Mitchell and Darius Crum, will come into the finals a little banged up. Atchison is the reigning 200-meter state champion, but will focus his efforts on relays.
