BROOKLYN, Michigan – The voices of doubt in Taylor Pogue’s head told her she didn’t have a chance to win anymore.

The voices of encouragement from her supporters told her otherwise.

It usually doesn’t turn out good for a runner who jumps out to a big lead, then loses it late in the race. Pogue knew that, which is why she felt she’d lost her grip on the state Division 2 cross country championship Saturday at Michigan International Speedway.

However, Pogue was able to summon one last burst of energy to overtake Lauren Grunewald of East Grand Rapids and join Janee Jones (2004) as Goodrich’s only state cross country champions.

Pogue finished in 18:11.0, the fourth-fastest time in the four divisions. Only three Division 1 girls ran faster. Grunewald finished in 18:18.7 and needed attention in the medical tent afterward.
